Klub Ujuzi (“Ujuzi” is a Swahili word for “Skill”) is a project founded through the Alternative Learning approach under the Nawiri program. Klub Ujuzi is a children’s table banking and mental health & wellness club, designed for school-going children aged 10-14 years (grade 4 to class 8) in rural public primary schools in Kenya to train them on income-generating activities and support them in improving their mental health and wellness as well as gaining financial literacy at an early age.
The Goal and Objective of this project is to support the learners in Elimu Fanaka’s partner schools and the community through financial literacy, mental health, and wellbeing.
Through this project, learners from rural communities will access quality and equitable education through alternative learning methods such as skills training. This ensures all members of society, especially women and girls and members of marginalized and underserved communities, can access and participate equally in educational opportunities, civil society, and economic activity.
Objectives
-
To increase school attendance and retention of school-going children (10-14 years old) caused by lack of lunch meals and malnutrition as they can use the earned skill to grow their own food.
-
To reduce aggression and poor peer relations, and increase performance as learners and students in school will be able to focus on their studies.
-
To increase community participation and support for their children’s education as we engage parents, teachers, and other community members through the project activities.
-
To reduce substance abuse cases, risky sexual behaviors, and crime related to youth restlessness. Elimu Fanaka will ensure that the activities that the youth (15-24 years old alums supporting the learners) engage in will create income and provide them with everyday necessities/basic needs.
-
To increase mental health knowledge in rural communities through the engagement of the Train The Trainer model (T3), Elimu Fanaka will expand the scope of trained youth to continue the program after the end of the project timeline, this will increase the literacy levels and create healthy communities focused on wellbeing.
