On September 8, 2021, we celebrated International Literacy Day. As per the United Institute of Statistics of UNESCO, Kenya’s literacy rate is 81.5%. Unfortunately, we still have illiteracy among those considered literate. In early September, Tuko Media published a story of a girl by the name Maureen who, apparently, was to join high school but she couldn’t read nor write. The big question then is, ‘Is the education being provided in schools of a quality that provides learners with usable and practical skills?’
Why Mbulia needs a Library and a Fence
Earlier in 2021, a herd of elephants was spotted near Mbulia Primary School. As word spread around the community, some parents were unsure about taking their children to school because of the safety risk. As a result, absenteeism increased and the task of convincing parents to send learners back to school was a challenge.
In addition, Mbulia learners have a challenge accessing learning materials since the school lacks facilities for reading materials. Books donated by the government are shared amongst them and since they are not enough, learners carry them home in shifts. In scenarios where they are given assignments, learners scramble for the books and some get damaged or lost in the process. Those donated by well-wishers are kept in the staffroom where some learners are unsure about the availability of the books or borrowing procedures.
